Stars sweep two games, near .500

After allowing a goal in the first seconds of the game, the River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team shut out North Wright County for the next 50 minutes and came away with a 3-1 victory at the Koronis Civic Arena on Thursday.

North Wright County scored 17 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but the Stars tied the game and took the lead in the next six minutes. First, sophomore Kenzie Novak scored four minutes later to tie the game 1-1. Then, eighth grader Jenn Paul scored six minutes into the game to give the Stars a 2-1 lead.

The two teams played scoreless hockey for the rest of the first period and all of the second period. After more than a half hour of play without a goal, the Stars added an insurance goal early in the third period as senior Amber Schulzeten-berge scored on a power play, making the final score 3-1.

The Stars outshot North Wright County 36-15. They allowed 11 shots in the first period but limited North Wright County to four shots over the final two periods.

With two wins last week, the Stars came close to evening their season record, which now stands at 8-9-2.

This week, the Stars played at St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday. They will host Willmar on Thursday at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville.

Next week, the Stars will play at Sartell on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

River Lakes 9, Little Falls 0
The Stars completed a season sweep of the winless Flyers with a 9-0 road victory on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

The Stars, who set a record with 93 shots in their 11-4 victory over Little Falls in November, outshot the Flyers 42-9 last week. They scored twice early in the first period, three times in the second period, and four times in the third.

Ninth grader Gina Athmann scored just over a minute into the game for the Stars, giving them a lead they would not relinquish. Athmann led the Stars with four points (two goals and two assists).

Senior Allie Stalboerger added three points (two goals and two assists) for the Stars. Junior Shannon Smith also scored two goals for the Stars.

Other multiple-point getters for River Lakes were: senior Amber Schulzetenberge (goal and assist); sophomore Kenzie Novak (two assists); and sophomore Abbie Rhoda (goal and assist).

Senior Marie Omann scored the other goal for the Stars.

Ninth grader Tracy Skluzacek needed to make only nine saves to record the shutout for the Stars.
