River Lakes boys fall flat
The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team lost two games last week, to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Friday 6-2 and to St. Michael-Albert-ville on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 5-1.|
Coach Kevin Mooney said the Stars played flat in both games and regressed from their play at a Christmas tournament, where they won two games and took second.
"We thought we had some momentum coming out of the holiday tournament, but the almost two-week layoff must have affected us," said Mooney.
Against LPGE, the Stars took the early lead on a goal by senior Derek Dahlen five minutes into the game, but the Thunder scored three goals in less than three minutes towards the end of the first period.
The Stars got a goal in the second period from junior Kyle Curran, but the Thunder scored two more in the second and a final goal in the third to win 6-2.
The Stars played even for 27 of the first 30 minutes against St. Michael-Albertville last Tuesday. After 14 scoreless minutes, the Knights scored their first goal with a minute left in the first period. Then, after 13 scoreless minutes in the second period, they scored two goals in the last two minutes of that period.
STMA added two more goals in the third period before junior Mike McMahon scored to make the final 5-1.
This week, the Stars have three games. They played at Sauk Centre on Tuesday. They will play at Benson on Thursday, and they play at Pequot Lakes on Saturday.
First Period: RL-Derek Dahlen (Andrew Schmitt); LPGE-Dan Hillman (Levi Berg, Matt Pesta); LPGE-Pesta; LPGE-Justin Schultz (Josh Tesch, Tommy Jorgenson);
First Period: STMA-Patrick Henry (Kyle Rogers);
