Wrestlers place ninth at Farmington, sweep at Melrose

The Bulldogs wrestling team placed ninth at the Farmington Invitational on Saturday, beating Lakeville 53-18 and Farmington 54-21 but losing to Chatfield 40-29 and to South St. Paul 40-32.

Against Lakeville, the Dogs built leads of 19-5 and 37-15 and never trailed in winning 53-18. Junior A.J. Christian (125), senior Todd Thielen (130), junior Keith Klein (140), junior Sean Glenz (145), senior Jack Mueller (160), senior Josh Tebben (215), and senior Jimmy Jansen provided pins for the Bulldogs against Lakeville.

Against Farmington, the Dogs jumped to a 30-0 lead thanks to three pins and two forfeits and won 54-21. Ninth grader Jordan Christian (103), junor Joe Sheridan (112), and A.J. Christian (130) got pins for the Dogs in their opening streak. Also recording pins was Keith Klein (140), while ninth grader Kevin Klein added a technical fall at 171.

Against Chatfield, the Dogs rallied from a 25-9 deficit to take a 29-25 lead but lost the final three weights to lose the match 40-29. Jordan Christian and Sheridan gave the Dogs a 9-0 lead by winning a decision and pin respectively. Then the Dogs won four straight matches from 145 to 171. Sophomore Aaron Burris started this run with a decison at 145, Glenz and Mueller had back-to-back pins at 152 and 160, and Kevin Klein won by technical fall at 171. Chatfield, though, rallied to win the match.

Against South St. Paul, the Dogs again had a lead but could not hold it as South St. Paul rallied to win 40-32. Providing pins for the Dogs were Jordan Christian (103), Keith Klein (140), Mueller (152), and Tebben (215). Sheridan and Thielen added major decisions at 112 and 130 respectively.

The Dogs won only six of 14 weights against both Chatfield and South St. Paul.

Jordan Christian, Sheridan, and Mueller finished the tournament undefeated for the Dogs, while Glenz suffered his first loss of the season with an overtime 9-7 decision against South St. Paul.

This week, the Dogs hosted state-rated Sauk Centre on Tuesday in a conference match. This match was originally scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 13, but was moved to Tuesday, Jan. 11.

The Bulldogs will host the Paynesville Invitational on Saturday. Junior varsity action starts at 9:30 a.m. with the varsity scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Teams scheduled to compete in the individual tourney are Dassel-Cokato, Deer River, Eden Prairie, LQPV, Jackson County Central, and Scott West.

Melrose Quadrangular
The Dogs swept three matches at the Melrose Quadrangular on Tuesday, Jan. 4, beating BBE 51-25, Rush City 51-19, and Melrose 46-24.

Against BBE, the Dogs trailed 25-21 before winning the final six weights, including four forfeits. Senior Jeff Schaefer and senior Jimmy Jansen provided pins at 189 and 275 respectively in the Dogs' winning run. Other winners by pin were ninth grader Jordan Christian at 103 and sophomore Aaron Burris at 145. Sophomore Joe Sheridan recorded an 11-10 decision over state-rate Tyler Rath for the Dogs' final win at 112.

Against Rush City, the Dogs rushed to a 16-0 lead and then, after Rush City cut their lead to 20-19, got six straight wins to end the match. Getting wins during that stretch were junior Sean Glenz (fall at 152), senior Jack Mueller (major decision at 160), ninth grader Kevin Klein (pin at 171), ninth grader Jordan Spaeth (decision at 189), and ninth grader Luke Frank (pin at 215). Other winners for the Dogs were Jordan Christian by major decision at 103, Sheridan by pin at 112, and seventh grader Justin Wendlandt by pin at 119.

Against Melrose, senior Josh Tebben clinched their 46-24 win with a pin at 215. Melrose led 20-18, and trailed by ten with two weights to go before Tebben's clinching pin. Other winners for the Dogs, who also got three forfeits, were Glenz by pin at 152, senior Jack Mueller by pin at 160, Kevin Klein by major decision at 171, and Frank by pin at 275.
