Second-half rally leads Dogs to victory
A second-half rally over LPGE last week gave the Bulldogs girls' basketball team their second straight conference win, and third overall. The Dogs trailed by five points at halftime but outscored LPGE by 11 points in the second half, 31-20, to win 52-46.|
"A strong second half by Paynesville to get the win led by (junior) Jacque Schlangen and (senior) Brooke Schmitz," said coach Jackie Parsley.
Brooke Schmitz led the Dogs in virtually every category: scoring 15 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, dishing four assists, and making two steals and two blocks.
Schlangen scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half, as the Dogs rallied for victory. Sophomore Brittni Schmitz scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half as well.
With their second straight win in the West Central Conference North, the Dogs improved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Dogs are currently fifth in the conference standings: New London-Spicer (5-0); Albany (4-0); Melrose (3-2); Minnewaska (3-2); Paynesville (2-3); LPGE (1-4); St. Cloud Cathedral (1-4); and Sauk Centre (0-5).
This week, the Dogs traveled to Morris on Tuesday night for a non-conference game. They will travel to St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday. Next week, they will travel to Sauk Centre on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
