The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team gained experience but still fell short of a win against LPGE on Friday, Jan. 5.

Co-captain, Marya Losinski said, "It is so much fun to see all of the girls improve throughout the season. We keep improving with every game and that's really what this year is about."

Hannah Parker had two goals and one assist for Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in their 6-1 home win over the Stars.

The River Lakes had trouble with their positioning in the first period, which led to two goals by LPGE in the first 15 minutes.

LPGE scored two more times in the second period, but Emily Moschkau answered back with a goal for the Stars to make the score 4-1.

The Stars had two power play advantages in the second period. They had great set ups and passing during the power plays, which resulted in numerous shots. But they were unable to knock the puck into the net.

The Stars committed only one penalty, but LPGE made them pay by scoring on their only power play opportunity.

LPGE kept up their momentum in the third period by scoring two more goals.

Partway into the third period, Crystal Songetay relieved Trisha Wendlandt in goal. The two goalies combined to make 17 saves.

The Stars had 12 shots on net, compared to 23 for LPGE.

The Stars are 0-13-1 overall.

The River Lakes will host St. Cloud Apollo tomorrow at the River Lakes Arena in Ricmond at 7:30 p.m.
