Hat trick beats the Stars in overtime, 3-2

The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey played an incredibly close make-up game against Marshall last Saturday.

Both teams went into this game knowing they needed to hit hard, give it everything they had, and to stay out of the penalty box. The last of these goals proved to be a challenge for the Stars, who committed six penalties in a 3-2 overtime loss.

The game was scoreless for the first eight and a half minutes, until Marshall put one in. River Lakes answered back with a goal from Joe Howe. That was all the scoring for the first period, and the second period had no scoring at all.

The third period was the most exciting and most nerve racking of the game. At 10:47 of the third period, the puck was covered in the crease by one of the River Lakes players (not the goalie). This called for a penalty shot for Marshall, and ended up in another goal by Marshall's Jeff Jacobs.

Trailing by one with a little over a minute left in the game, the Stars' Derek Dahlen blocked a shot from the point, outskated the Marshall defenseman down the ice, and faked out the goalie on a breakaway to tie the game at two.

Five minutes into overtime, Jacobs completed his hat trick for Marshall and scored the winning goal, making the final 3-2 for Marshall.
