Dogs rebound to beat Lester Prairie
The Bulldogs boys' basketball team used a strong first quarter to defeat Lester Prairie 65-63 in the Kimball Tournament last week. |
The Bulldogs rebounded from their first loss of the season in the first game of the tournament, to host Kimball, by outscoring Lester Prairie 20-4 in the first quarter and withstanding a strong second-half rally by Lester Prairie on Monday, Dec. 29.
Senior Doug Mages (pictured above with the ball), who led the Bulldogs with 25 points, scored nine points in the first eight minutes against Lester Prairie, as the Dogs limited Lester Prairie to two field goals in the first period, building a 20-4 lead.
Lester Prairie cut their deficit to ten at halftime, to eight entering the fourth quarter, and to two by the end of the game, but the Bulldogs held on for a two-point win.
Lester Prairie made eight three-pointers, including seven in the second half, but the Dogs outscored Lester Prairie 12-1 at the free throw line.
Mages led the Dogs with 25 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Senior Adam Kampsen added 18 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Ninth grader Cory Nietfeld had 11 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. Senior Adam Hemmesch had nine points, and senior Jordan Haag had five steals and nine rebounds.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 5-1 for the season. (The Dogs won just six games in 2002-03.) The three-team, round-robin Kimball Tournament ended in a three-way tie. Paynesville beat Lester Prairie 65-63 on Monday, Dec. 29; Lester Prairie beat Kimball 64-43 on Tuesday, Dec. 30; and Kimball beat Paynesville 57-53 on Monday, Dec. 22.
This week, the Bulldogs played Benson on Monday. They will play at Sauk Centre on Friday and will play at Annandale next Tuesday.
