River Lakes takes second at tourney

By Michael Jacobson

The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team won two out of three games at a holiday tournament in Pine City last week and took second place. The Stars beat Barron, Wis., 7-0 on Thursday, beat Moose Lake 3-1 on Friday, but lost to host Pine City 4-1 in the championship game on Saturday.

"Our boys really put their game together this weekend, and the coaching staff is very proud of the team performance," said coach Kevin Mooney.

Against Barron, the Stars jumped to a 2-0 lead after one period and put the game away with four goals in the second. Senior forward Mike Heinen and junior center Kyle Curran led the team with two goals and an assist apiece.

Senior defenseman Darren Stommes, junior defenseman A.J. Bohlman, and sophomore forward Mike Anderson added a goal and an assist apiece in the victory.

Sophomore goalie Blake Theisen recorded the shutout for the Stars.

Against Moose Lake on Friday, the Stars broke a 1-1 tie with two goals in the last 63 seconds of the game. Curran scored with just over a minute to play to give the Stars a 2-1 lead, with an assist from senior defenseman Dave Schramel.

Anderson scored with just over 30 seconds to play as the Stars advanced to the finals with a 3-1 victory. Anderson, who also scored in the first period on an assist from Stommes, scored two goals in the victory.

Theisen made 27 saves in the victory.

Against Pine City on Saturday, the hosts took the championship trophy with a 4-1 win and the Stars had to content themselves with runner-up honors. Pine City scored twice during what Mooney called a shaky first period for the Stars.

But junior defenseman Luke Braun scored in the second period, assisted by seniors Derek Dahlen and Andrew Schmitt, to cut the deficit to one at 2-1.

Pine City, though, got two goals in the third to seal the victory. "They were very fast and physical," said Mooney, "but our boys were up to the task."

The strong showing in the tournament raised the team's season record to 3-6. The coaching staff continues to see the team move in the right direction. "We believe all the hard work and positive attitude by the team is finally paying off," explained Mooney, "and we should really begin stringing together some wins in January."

The Stars will play next at St. Michael-Albertville on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
