By Crystal Songetay

The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team competed in the Holiday Cup Tournament in Blaine on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The Stars played three games during the tournament, against Champlin, Shakopee, and St. Francis.

Unfortunately, the Stars came home with three losses; however, they had one very eventful game against Shakopee.

On Thursday, the first game for the Stars was against Champlin, which they lost 10-2 with junior Emily Moshkau and senior Marya Losinski scoring goals for the Stars.

Junior Trisha Wendlandt was in goal and made 30 saves for the Stars.

"This was a tough team for us. The girls tried very hard and didn't quit until the game ended; their team effort was outstanding during this game. I am very proud of the girls," commented coach Kirby St. John.

Then the Stars played Shakopee on Friday, losing 2-1 in overtime with ninth grader Marie Omann scoring the single goal for River Lakes in the first period. The Stars went into the third period tied 1-1 against Shakopee, and neither team scored during the third period, forcing overtime. After an eight minute overtime, still neither team had scored.

After that, both teams had a penalty-shot shootout. Shakopee scored on their sixth try to win 2-1.

Senior goalie Crystal Songetay made 56 saves for the Stars in the loss.

On Saturday, the Stars played St. Francis and lost 3-1. Losinski scored the only goal for the Stars in the first period, and Wendlandt made 25 saves.
