Libraries to close for two days

The Paynesville Public Library will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 26, and Friday, Dec. 27, as a cost-cutting move.

All public libraries in the Great River Regional Library system in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, and Wright counties will be closed on these two days in addition to the normal holiday closing on Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25.

No library materials will be due on those dates. Book returns will be closed and access to the Great River Regional Library (GRRL) system's website (www.griver.org) will also be unavailable.

Normal library service will resume on Saturday, Dec. 28. This measure was approved by the GRRL Board of Trustees this fall because of revenue shortfalls for the 2003 financial year. Library staff will not be paid for these extra two days of closing and the savings will appear in the first payroll of 2003.

GRRL is beginning a fund-raising effort in the hope of avoiding further cuts in service and materials during 2003. The library system is facing financial problems caused by increasing costs as well as funding cutbacks at the state level.
