MnDOT opens Highway 23 to four lanes

A 6.2-mile segment of Highway 23 between I-94 and Cold Spring opened last week, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Some striping (painting lines) was done late last week, causing lanes to be temporarily closed.

MnDOT had originally announced that a 7.6-mile stretch of four-lane highway would remain as a two-lane road this fall and would have to wait until next spring to open.

Local city officials and businesses in Rockville pushed for opening the four-lane roadway this fall, and MnDOT arranged to have a crossover built that enabled a 6.2-mile segment to open this year.

Two years remain on the Highway 23 expansion project from I-94 to Richmond. Next year, the highway will be detoured as work is done in Cold Spring. Then in 2004, the four-lane highway should be constructed to Richmond.
