Press receives media award

By Michael Jacobson

The Paynesville Press recently received the 2003 Media Award from the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Publisher Peter Jacobson accepted the award at their annual convention at the Radisson South in Bloomington last week.

The Press was nominated for the award by the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District for the Press' coverage of the new lake management plan for Lake Koronis and Rice Lake and for other coverage of SWCD projects in the Paynesville area, said SWCD staffer Aaron Meyer.

"We just thought you guys did a stand-up job of covering conservation and the Soil and Water Conservation District," said Meyer, who noted that strong cooperative relationship is needed between media and districts to promote conservation.

The Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District was named the outstanding district in the state at the annual conference last week.

In accepting the media award, Jacobson said two things are needed to cover conservation well: good projects, which the Paynesville area has thanks to the Stearns County SWCD and the Kandiyohi County SWCD, and good editorial staff to write the stories.

Jacobson also has a strong personal interest in conservation, serving as president of the Koronis Lake Association and planting trees on his farm and enrolling much of it in the Conservation Reserve Program.
