Kendall is new county attorney

Following a recount, Janelle Kendall is the new Stearns County Attorney. Kendall led after the initial counting by 147 votes over her opponent Mary Yunker. Because the difference was less than one half percent, a recount was done, at Yunker's request, at county expense. (See 2002 election results here.)

The recount was conducted last week and added 263 votes to the final numbers. The gap between Kendall and Yunker narrowed. In the final tally, only 56 votes separated them. Kendall won with 25,857 votes to 25,801 for Yunker.

Kendall will replace Roger Van Heel, who has served as county attorney for nearly three decades. Van Heel finished third in the September primary behind Kendall and Yunker
