Lions award youth service honors

This is the second year the Paynesville Area Lions Club has initiated a program to honor and recognize seniors in high school who have demonstrated out-standing character during their school year by offering their time for the benefit of others.

This volunteer service is consistent with the values of the Lions Club and they believe it’s important to encourage and recognize that spirit. Eight students will be selected this year for the award.

The November recipients of the award are Liz Hubert and Doug Marthaler.

Hubert is the daughter of Pastor Richard and Karen Hubert, rural Hawick. She is a peer tutor, peer helper, a member of the Student Council, Target Leadership, National Honor Society, FLA, Yearbook staff, letter club, Business Professionals of America, Youth Advisory Board, and plays volleyball and served as the volleyball team manager this year.

Hubert is also a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Care Center, a 4-H member, sings on a worship team at the Evangelical Free Church, has gone on two mission trips to Mexico and one to Minneapolis, and has helped at Bible school.

She plans on being a missionary overseas someday.

When not busy at school or church, she works at Ark Agency in Paynesville.

Doug Marthaler is the son of Wilfred and Joyce Marthaler, rural Lake Henry. He is a peer helper and peer tutor, a member of Target Leadership and FFA at school, sings in the pops choir, choir, letter club, and drama.

Marthaler is a CCD sub, mass server at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Lake Henry, sings in the church youth choir, serves as a Big Brother and sings with On Call Tuesday, a youth ministry team.

When not busy at school or church, he can be found working at home or helping neighbors farm.
