Property taxes due next week

By Michael Jacobson

The second half of the 2002 real estate tax is due and payable. The last day to pay the second half of the 2002 real estate tax is Tuesday, Oct. 15, except for agricultural property, whose deadline for the second payment is Friday, Nov. 15.

According to the Stearns County Treasurer's Office, taxpayers have some new payment options.

Taxpayers can pay by Internet. E-Check allows taxpayers to pay their 2002 real estate taxes 24 hours a day online. Visit the county's website at www.co.stearns.mn.us and click on the "Pay Property Taxes" button for this option. Taxes by this method can be paid up until 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Taxes can also be paid on monthly or quarterly installment plans. These payments are automatically deducted from a checking or savings account. This insures that payments will be made on time. For more information, call the treasurer's office at 320-656-3870 and ask for the "Direct Payment Plan."

Payments can be brought either to the License Center West at 3335 West St. Germain, Suite 107, in St. Cloud or to the auditor/treasurer's office at the Administration Center by the county courthouse.

Payments can be mailed, but must be postmarked by the post office on or before the due date. Postmarks of private postage meter machines may not be used to establish timely mailing.

Late payments will be returned if the proper penalty is not included. The penalty rate information is included on the reverse side of the tax statements.

To insure proper credit, taxpayers should return the stub portion of the tax statement with their payment.

Call the treasurer's office with any questions at 320-656-3870.
