District #741 School Board Meeeting

By Michael Jacobson

The Paynesville Area School Board took the following actions at their meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

-The board approved a levy proposal for 2004 property taxes. The proposed levy ($1,249,000) is down 11 percent from 2003, mainly due to increased state aid for the district's excess levy.

-The board did not set a Truth-in-Taxation hearing this year, citing poor turnouts in the past. The board opted instead to handle any questions about taxes on an individual basis. If requested by the public, the board indicated it would consider holding a hearing.

-The board approved hiring the following as election judges for the school board election on Tuesday, Nov. 4: Donna Ahrens, head judge; Vicky Pearson; Janet Fleck; and Pete Hoppe. Alternates are Lorraine Adams and Ron Iverson.

-The board also approved wages for election judges at $7 per hour with a $5 food expense.

-The board approved the following extracurricular assignments for the 2003-04 school year: Ken Vork and Cal Davidson as co-directors for the high school play; Vork as the director for the middle school play; and Joan Nevitt as the director for the one-act play.

-The board approved an employee assignment for 68.25 hours for Diane Gilk as an instructional assistant for preschool screening.

-The board approved a lane change for high school teacher Phil Carlson.
