Tire recall affects Paynesville

Car owners are receiving letters in the mail telling them to have their Firestone tires checked. Because of a defect, Bridgestone/Firestone recalled 6.5 million Firestone 15-inch radial ATX, radial ATX II, and Wilderness tires. These tires are installed as original equipment on Ford Explorers, Rangers, and Broncos, and Mercury Mountaineers.

Yarmon Ford and Mercury in Paynesville has a limited number of tires on hand, as does their supplier. People needing replacement tires are being placed on a waiting list. "People are calling for different tires, and we don't have them on hand," said Dan Wall, service manager. As the tires come in, the car owner is notified. At present, there is a two-week waiting list.

Darron Nelson, parts manager at Yarmon, said Ford is inspecting vehicles with Firestone tires at no cost to their customers. If they have a recalled tire, they will replace the tire. If the customer does not want to wait for another Firestone tire, Firestone will pay up to $100 to have a competitor's tire placed on the vehicle and the tire balanced.
