Community Service Center
creating volunteer schedule

By Michael Jacobson

The Paynesville Community Service Center is looking to expand its volunteer base and switch to a monthly or even bi-monthly schedule. A half dozen volunteers are needed every Wednesday when the center is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A core of volunteers have provided dedicated service to the center, said director Donna Toney, but the switch is needed to accommodate additional interest in volunteering. Current volunteers will be included in the new schedule.

Toney said numerous people have shown interest in volunteering to her and to the center's governing board. "Really, I think it should be more of a variety, and people should have a chance to see what we do," explained Toney.

A range of skills can be used at the center, according to Toney. Some volunteers can work with clients while others can rotate stock or sort through donations. One need Toney sees is to have youth sort through the donations of youth clothing to pick out the best items.

The center distributes clothing and household items on the first and second Wednesdays of each month and distributes food on the third and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

Other times can be made by appointment.

Toney allows food to be given out at others times as needed. About the only hard rule is that clients can only receive food once per month.

Volunteers can also help at times when the center is closed. Toney said the center's garage needs to be organized, minor repairs are needed at the center, and anyone who is willing to clean would be appreciated.

Additional volunteers are also needed before holidays and for special projects. Clients are not eligible to become volunteers.

Anyone interested in volunteering or in learning more about it can contact Toney at the center at 320-243-4953 or at home at 320-548-3309.
