Maher joins funeral home staff

Steve Maher Steve Maher joined the staff at the Johnson Funeral Home June 1. A native of Benson, he started his career working at the local funeral home when he was in ninth grade. He washed cars and mowed the lawn and gradually worked into helping with funerals.

"I became interested in being a funeral director when my grandfather died. When I saw how much better he looked at the funeral home than when he was at home, I thought I'd like to do that for people," Maher said.

"I wanted to help people," Maher added.

While in college at St. Cloud State University, he worked at the Benson Funeral Home in St. Cloud. He continued to work at the funeral home on weekends when he was home from college. He has worked at the funeral home in Benson since 1997.

Maher has been a licensed funeral director since 1995. He and his wife Kristy, have two children, Mackenzie, 5, and Maxwell, one and a half. Kristy is a counselor at Benson High School. His interests are hunting with muzzle loaders, fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family.
