Maintenance starts on Highway 23 in town this week

By Michael Jacobson

Milling and replacing the bituminous surface in Paynesville began this week (on Monday, June 27) for the Highway 23 maintenance project from Richmond to Paynesville. The contractor is asking that people not park on Highway 23 in Paynesville until the project is completed.

The resurfacing project began in early June and should last into July. In early June, crews built nine new turn lanes and bypass lanes between Paynesville and Richmond. Then, milling the existing bituminous surface and replacing the pavement began, with work in Paynesville delayed until after Town and Country Days.

Motorists should expect delays and should watch for heavy equipment and workers. No detours are planned, but motorists will be directed by flag crews in work areas. The project is expected to last until early July, with Highway 23 being restriped in Paynesville to allow for a center turn lane.
