Couple builds custom cabinet doors

By Bonnie Jo Hanson

Jim and Cindy Spanier recently opened their own business, Spanier Doors and More.

Located on County Road 19, three miles west of Lake Henry, Spanier Doors and More specializes in building custom raised panel cabinet doors and making custom millwork, usually out of woods that may not be available at mass retailers.

The Spanier's doors are sold to cabinet makers who use them in new cabinet construction, as well as to homeowners who use them to reface existing cabinets.

Jim makes doors and does all of the lathe work while Cindy does millwork (moldings, etc.) and does the company's books. Their projects are limited only by the imagination, said Jim. From raised panel ceiling tiles to bars built completely of old barn wood, Jim likes to work on a variety of pieces. He is even making baseball bats for the Lake Henry Lakers.

Jim and Cindy also offer spray finishing for their customer's projects. Jim believes this service is valuable to hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers who may not have facilities for finishing their work.

Jim worked for a local cabinet maker for 13 years before striking out on his own last fall. It's taken until this spring to get things really going, said Cindy.

The Spanier's shop is located less than 50 feet from their home. One reason they wanted to own their own business is so they could be near their three kids. They love the flexibility that owning a business gives them and like that while they are working, their kids can be nearby.
