Girl Scout volunteers in the area recently received an award from Land of Lakes Girl Scout Council for their contributions to Girl Scouting.

The Paynesville area earned a gold super service unit award. This area represents Belgrade, Farming, Hawick, Lake Henry, Paynesville, Roscoe and St. Martin.

The service unit has 170 girl members and 41 adult volunteer members in 21 troops. Phyllis Gardner, volunteer community coordinator, leads this area. The Girl Scouts have been “on-time” with their spring registration for seven years. For the strong support from the community, girls give back with services like highway cleanup, tree planting, and helping at the Special Olympics. The Girl Scouts also shook baby rattles in the community to support their H.U.G.S. for Babies project.

The criteria for the gold award includes increasing Girl Scout membership, recognizing adult leader-ship, and creating a well-balanced, effective Girl Scout program.
