DNR honors Joe Pung

By Linda Stelling

Chisago County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Pung was recently presented with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' Water Patrol Deputy of the Year Award.

A 1961 graduate of Paynesville High School, Pung has been a water patrol deputy for Chisago County for 25 years, including a number of years where he was the only water patrol deputy in the county.

His accomplishments include working long hours of patrol, education, rescue and recovery operations; helping set up and staff county fair booths on water safety; developing improved training methods for fire departments, search and rescue units, and other federal, state, and local agencies who work in body recovery; establishing close working relationships with the lake associations; and assisting the DNR in production of a training video on the body recovery techniques used in Chisago County and developed by the deputies and conservation officers.

Pung is the son of Julia Spanier of Paynesville.
