Puppeteers give performance at Nordland

By Ryan Flanders

Puppet show at Nordland Lutheran Church God's Allstar Puppeteers put on a puppet show at Nordland Lutheran Church on Sunday, May 18.

The group consists of eleven kids between grades 4-9, and five adult leaders who each work on a different aspect of the show.

The theme of last Sunday's performance was, "You are the light of the world." The group prepared for the show by meeting two Sundays a month since January.

God's Allstar Puppeteers put on a show which featured music, dialogue, and special effects such as smoke and black lights.

"Our goal as a group is to share the word of God with others in a new way," said Vicky Pearson, one of the group's leaders. Pearson says the puppets appeal to a wide variety of ages. "After a show, we often hear people say, 'I've never seen my kid sit still in church before!'"

This is the fifth year the group has been together. While some current members are in their third year with the group, many are newcomers. The training process begins with becoming familiar with the puppet so that it can become life-like and take on a personality of its own, said Pearson. After that, the focus shifts to music and choreography.

This year's show was the first to make use of black lights. This presented a new challenge for choreography, because the puppeteers had to learn to stay close enough to the black lights and hold the puppets at the correct angle.
