Grass still dry enough to burn

Despite the rain and flooding this spring, grass in the area can still burn. In the last two weeks, the Paynesville Fire Department has responded to more than four grass fires. Statewide, more than 140 wildfires were reported.

Fire chief Jim Freilinger cautioned people to be aware that dead grass is still dry on top and will burn easily.

As the green grass continues to grow, the problem will be eliminated. But in the meantime, watch the direction of the wind when burning, have a supply of water nearby, obtain a burning permit, and notify the sheriff's dispatcher when you are burning, Freilinger said.
