Melrose man announces 13A candidacy

By Michael Jacobson

Dick Thull Dick Thull of rural Melrose has announced his candidacy for the legislative seat in District 13A. He will seek the DFL endorsement.

The House seat in District 13A, created by the recentredistricting, is an open seat.

Thull, a retired dairy farmer from Grove Township, is the chairman of the Stearns County Township OfficerÕs Association and a member of the Grove Township Board.

"As a member of the township board, IÕve seen firsthand the impact state tax policies can have on local units of government. WeÕve lost nearly 30 percent of the money we once received to improve roads. As a legislator, I would work hard to make sure small towns and townships get their fair share of tax dollars dedicated to transportation and other vital revenue sharing," said Thull.

Education and health care are two issues that Thull said he would concentrate on as a legislator. He feels it is high time to look at the high cost of health insurance for farmers and self-employed people.

Education is the cheapest investment we can make for the future," he added. "We also need to look at adult education for people changing jobs or improving their work skills."

Thull also supports bio-diesel and ethanol production.

A 1965 graduate of Melrose High School, Thull served four years in the army and is a member of the Lake Henry Legion. Thull and his family live on a farm that was homesteaded by the Thull family in 1878.
