Students earn second place at Science Olympiad

The Paynesville Area Middle School Science Club members won second place honors at the Regional Science Olympiad on Saturday, April 26, in Montevideo at the middle school. First place honors went to Montevideo.

Their fifth year of competition, the science bowl team took first place honors by defeating their opponents overwhelmingly. In the first round, team members Cassie Chrast, Jon Millner Adam Miller, and Trent Maetzold, won 370-60 points over their closest competitor. The second round score was 190-90 and final round 160-90.

Besides the science bowl, the students competed in six other events. Events and their placings were: aerodynamics, Jon Millner, first place; boat race one, Milan Virant and Scott Thomes, first place; boat race two, Sarah Massmann and Jenny Mackedanz, third place; egg drop, Amber Spanier and Cassie Chrast, first place; orienteering, Adam Winter and Trevor Palmer, third place; pentathalon, Susie Swyter, Danille Lieser, Mike Schlick and Jon Millner, third place.

When not in competition, the students were able to take part in demonstrations. Topics included reptiles, habitat awareness and rollercoasters. In the rollercoaster demonstration, the students had a chance to design their own rollercoasters.
