Scheierl, Roos chosen as Boys Staters at PAHS

By Michael Jacobson

Boys' staters, Jon Scheierl and Eric Roos Juniors Jon Scheierl (left) and Eric Roos (right) have been chosen as the Boys Stater and alternate respectively at Paynesville Area High School this spring.

Last year, the school did not have any juniors interested in being Boys Stater and the position was empty.

But both Scheierl and Roos heard good things from the Boys Stater two years ago, Scott Buermann.

Scheierl, the son of Tom and Florence Scheierl, will attend Boys State Camp at St. John's University from June 8-14, where he will learn about government with firsthand experience. Scheierl has already studied government in school and through the Boy Scouts Ð where he has earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

"I think I will learn a lot more (about government) at camp," he said.

Roos, the son of Jayne and John Roos, also thought it would be a good experience to be the Boys Stater and a way to get more involved at school. Scheierl and Roos were judged by members of the teaching staff and a representative from the American Legion. They also wrote essays, which can be found here.

Both will handle day-to-day duties at PAHS, like reading the afternoon announcements, raising and lowering the flag, leading the Pledge of Allegiance, participating in services at Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, and taking part at baccalaureate and graduation. Roos will actually be the representative at graduation since Scheierl will be on his way to camp.

Scheierl competes on the football and track and field teams at school. Outside of school, he likes to hunt and fish and play paint ball.

Roos is a peer tutor at school and likes to golf and be outside away from school.
