Township moves ahead with summer ice at arena

By Michael Jacobson

The Paynesville Township Board of Supervisors held a special meeting on Monday, April 19.

•The board opened bids for extra refrigeration equipment for the Koronis Civic Arena. The board accepted the low bid of $74,900 from the Paynesville-New London-Spicer Hockey Association.

The hockey association wants to upgrade the Koronis Civic Arena, owned by the township, adding insulation and refrigeration equipment in order have a month of summer ice for camps and clinics. As a nonprofit organization, the hockey association was able to purchase the refrigeration equipment without paying sales tax.

The board accepted the bids with a couple conditions, including that the contractors have proper insurance and that the revised lease between the township and hockey association is signed. This new lease includes an addendum by which the township is repaid for the $100,000 in improvements to the arena over five years.
