Six speech students advance to sections

By Michael Jacobson

Six of nine speech team members at Paynesville Area High School have qualified for section competition. A seventh is an alternate for sections.

The subsection speech meet was held at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City High School on Saturday, April 6. The top six individuals in each event received medals and advanced to sections.

Placing first for Paynesville was sophomore Melissa Andrie in original oratory. Placing second were junior Hannah Felling in discussion, junior Crystal Songetay in extemporaneous speaking, and sophomore Maureen Flanders in humorous. Sophomores Sami Tierney (creative expression) and Peter Schreifels (humorous) placed fifth.

Coach Joan Nevitt said she was pleased to have six of nine students qualify for sections, especially since some did not advance last year.

Ninth grader Lisa Lenzmeier is a section alternate. Sophomore Jenn Terres and ninth grader Amanda Kern also earned team points for Paynesville.

Ten teams competed at subsections: ACGC, Buffalo Lake-Hector, Delano, Lester Prairie, McLeod, Minnewaska, New London-Spicer, Paynesville, Rockford, and Watertown-Mayer.

Rockford won the team title and Buffalo Lake-Hector took second.

The section speech meet will be held on Saturday, April 13, in Sauk Centre. The top three individuals in each event will advance to state.
