Paynesville safe on St. Patrick's Day

The Paynesville Police Department proudly announced that there were no DWI fatalities and no DWI arrests in the city of Paynesville and Paynesville Towship on St. Patrick's Day this year.

The Paynesville Police Depart-ment participated in an impaired-driver crackdown on St. Patrick's Day (Friday, March 17) this year.

From 2000 to 2005 on St. Patrick's Day in Minnesota, alcohol-related crashes killed seven people and injured 76, of whom 28 suffered life-altering injuries. More than 1,700 impaired drivers were arrested statewide during those six St. Patrick's Days.

In 2004, alcohol-related crashes in Stearns County killed six people and severly injured 17, costing the county an estimated $9.1 million. Nearly 986 people were arrested for impaired driving in Stearns County that year.

Statewide, there were 177 alcohol-related traffic deaths and more than 34,200 impaired driving arrests in 2004.
