Speech team takes second at subsections

The PAHS speech team took second, out of eight teams, at the subsection meet on Thursday at NL-S.

Four PAHS students took first, and 11 PAHS students placed fourth or higher to earn medals and advance to sections.

Rockford, with 60 team points, took first place. Paynesville was second with 38 points, followed by NL-S with 34 points. Other teams at the subsection meet were ACGC, Buffalo Lake-Hector, Norwood Young America, Glencoe-Silver Lake, and Watertown-Mayer.

Taking first place for Paynesville were senior Melissa Andrie in discussion, sophomore Caitlin Lien in informative speech, sophomore Emily Mehr in humorous speech, and senior Sami Tierney in creative expression.

Finishing second were senior Callie Frieler in storytelling and sophomore Lindsey Pelton and senior Jenn Terres in dramatic duo.

Senior Maureen Flanders (drama) and senior Peter Schreifels (prose) each placed third. Junior Amanda Kern (extemporaneous reading) and sophomore Lauren Vaske (great speeches) both took fourth.

These 11 students advance to section competition, which will be held at Rockford on Saturday, April 3. The top three in each event at sections will advance to state on Friday, April 16.

Also competing for Paynesville at subsections and earning team points were: senior Mara Heide (prose), sophomore Kristi Gale (prose), junior Troy Gerding (humorous speech), and junior Stacy Lahr (drama).
