The Paynesville Area Dollars for Scholars is starting its annual fund drive for contributions to the scholarship fund the week of March 31.

The Paynesville Area Dollars for Scholars is a volunteer supported nonprofit organization. Their objective is to provide Paynesville Area High School students funds to continue their education.

Scholarship recipients are selected anonymously on the basis of need, academic performance, and participation in school and community affairs. With no administrative costs, every dollar collected goes to fund the scholarships to students.

With 95 seniors graduating last year, 38 scholarships were administered in both vocational and four-year secondary education for a total of $14,000. Scholarship sponsors affected the educational goals of nearly 50 percent of the 1996 graduating class.

“It is our hope that by establishing a structure with annual membership contributions, we will eventually accumulate a scholarship fund that will perpetuate itself on interest alone,” Bob Bauer, committee member, said.

Dollars for Scholars committee members doing the drive are Dean Hanson, Bob Bauer, John Janotta, Bert Stanley, Carol Johnson, and Karen Whitcomb.
