PAHS speech team takes first place again

By Michael Jacobson

The PAHS speech team took first place, among small teams, at a meet at Melrose on Saturday, a week after taking first place among small teams at Sauk Centre.

Twenty schools competed at the Melrose meet, including 12 in the small-team category. (In speech, schools are placed into categories based on the size of their team, not the size of their school.)

Paynesville beat teams from ACGC, Albany, Annandale, Eagle Valley, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Little Falls, Melrose, Minnewaska, Rockford, Royalton, and Sartell.

Paynesville was first among small teams with 181 points, followed by Rockford (139 points) and Annandale (139 points).

Senior Melissa Andrie took first place in discussion and sophomore Caitlin Lien tied for first in informative speaking to lead Paynesville. Other medalists were senior Callie Frieler (second in storytelling) and senior Sami Tierney (third in creative speaking).

Making the final round and earning ribbons for Paynesville were: sophomore Emily Mehr (fourth in humorous speech); junior Troy Gerding (seventh in humorous speech); senior Jenn Terres and sophomore Lindsey Pelton (sixth in dramatic duos); junior Amanda Kern (eighth in extemporaneous reading) and senior Mara Heide (eighth in prose).

Sophomore Kristi Gale, junior Stacy Lahr, senior Peter Schreifels, and sophomore Lauren Vaske all earned team points for Paynesville. The PAHS speech team will compete in their last regular season meet on Saturday at NL-S.
