Speech team takes first at Sauk Centre

By Michael Jacobson

The PAHS speech team took first place, among small teams, at a meet at Sauk Centre on Saturday.

Paynesville scored 125 points to beat Sartell (81 points) and five other small teams. (In speech, schools are placed into categories - small, medium, and large - based on the size of their team, not the size of their school.)

St. Cloud Cathedral took first among the five large-team schools, and New London-Spicer took first among the eight schools with medium-sized teams.

Senior Peter Schreifels took second, the highest finish for a PAHS student, earning a medal. Senior Callie Frieler, sophomore Caitlin Lien, sophomore Emily Mehr, sophomore Lindsey Pelton, and senior Jenn Terres all reached the finals in their events and earned ribbons.

Also scoring points for PAHS were senior Maureen Flanders, sophomore Kristi Gale, junior Troy Gerding, junior Amanda Kern, and sophomore Lauren Vaske.

The Sauk Centre speech meet included 20 teams and 400 students.

On Saturday, Feb. 28, five PAHS students placed at a speech meet at St. Cloud State. Lien and senior Sami Tierney made the finals in their events and received medals. Senior Melissa Andrie, Frieler, and sophomore Courtney Colbert each earned honorable mention honors.
