Pietsch challenged by Kidd for supervisor spot, Part III

Incumbent township supervisor Don Pietsch is being challenged for re-election in Paynesville Township this year by resident David Kidd.

The township election will be held on Tuesday, March 9, with polling from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at the Paynesville Township Hall, located at 28780 Koronis Drive.

David Kidd
David Kidd, 44, has lived in Paynesville Township for five years on Briorwood Road near Lake Koronis. He has lived in Stearns County nearly his entire life, except for his service in the U.S. Navy. He is a crew leader/supervisor at Gold'n Plump Poultry in Cold Spring, a position he has held for seven years. He and his wife, Linda, have been married for eight years, and he has two grown daughters.

In your opinion, how important to the township is it to have a strong working relationship with the city of Paynesville?
The city and the township should have a working relationship, which is the most effective for the community as a whole. Many of the decisions which are made affect everyone in the area.

What is your long-range vision for Paynesville Township? What should the board accomplish in the next three years towards that vision?
A petition I worked on was circulated for a five-man supervisory board to be placed on the ballot to be voted on. I believe this would be an improvement to the board. I would like to see an increase in the services available to our senior citizens; to work with the state in an effort to save our natural resources; and to keep the Paynesville area a great place to raise families. And as Lake Koronis is the largest lake in Stearns County, I would like to put much effort into making it one of the cleanest lakes for all of our future generations to enjoy.

Incumbent Don Pietsch, 64, has lived in Paynesville Township full-time since 1988, after maintaining seasonal residence in the township for 24 years prior to that. He retired from the Litchfield Public Schools in 1999, after 23 years as a teacher and coach and 15 years as an administrator. He has served as a supervisor for Paynesville Township for the past six years, including four years as board chairman. He also serves on the Stearns County Township Officers Board, on the Stearns County Shoreline Review Panel, on the Highway 23 Task Force, on the Koronis-Rice Water Quality Committee, and other boards. He and his wife, Elvon, have two grown sons and six grandchildren.

In your opinion, how important to the township is it to have a strong working relationship with the city of Paynesville?
I believe it is important for the township to work independently from the city. However, it is most important for us to have a good working relationship with the city. There are many issues that must be worked through, such as Highway 23, annexation, parks, trails, pool, Community Education, and comprehensive planning of the Paynesville community. With the issues we are facing, it is most important that we develop and maintain a strong working relationship with the city of Paynesville.

What is your long-range vision for Paynesville Township? What should the board accomplish in the next three years towards that vision?
Long-range vision is we must deal with the expansion and development that we will experience in the near future. We will see pressure by land uses and residential development within our township. 1. Continue to improve our five-year road and bridge maintenance program. 2. Continue to strengthen the Koronis Civic Arena facility and its programs. 3. Trail funding with state and federal funds coordinated with local support. 4. Work with refining the Stearns County ordinance to better fit the needs of Paynesville Township. 5. Continue a strong working relationship with the city, to improve our annexation agreement, and fulfill the comprehensive plan of development as we deal with Highway 23. 6. Deal with the pool project if it becomes a reality. 7. Continue to keep the services/ taxation equation in balance.
