Speech team wins trophy at Willmar

By Michael Jacobson

The speech team from Paynesville Area High School won the small team trophy, taking first out of 12 teams, at a meet in Willmar on Thursday.

Nearly 20 schools competed at the meet, with over 300 individual contestants. The small team division included 12 schools whose teams have 15 or fewer students competing. Competing in the small team division were: ACGC, BBE, BOLD, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Hutchinson, KMS, Litchfield, Minnewaska, Montevideo, Paynesville, Redwood Valley, and Rocori.

For Paynesville, junior Hannah Felling earned a medal. Receiving ribbons for honorable mention were: junior Crystal Songetay, sophomores Melissa Andrie, Callie Frieler, Peter Schreifels, and Sami Tierney.

Sophomore Maureen Flanders and ninth grader Lisa Lenzmeier also earned team points for Paynesville.

The speech team also competed at a meet hosted by St. Cloud Apollo on Saturday. This meet featured 700 student competitors and was the caliber of a state meet, according to speech coach Joan Nevitt.

Felling again earned a medal, and Tierney earned honorable mention. Nevitt said these accomplishments were very good considering the level of competition and the size of the meet.

The speech team's next meet is at New London-Spicer High School on Saturday, March 2.
