By Michael Jacobson

The PAHS speech team hosted their home meet on Saturday and took second place among medium-sized schools.

Senior Amanda Kern led the medal winners for Paynesville with a third-place finish in extemporaneous reading.

Junior Caitlin Lien and senior Lisa Lenzmeier placed fourth in informative speech and original oratory, respectively. Junior Ashley Frank also placed fifth in original oratory for PAHS.

Earning honorable mention honors for Paynesville were: junior Courtney Colbert (poetry), senior Troy Gerding (humorous), junior Emily Mehr (humorous), and eighth grader Ralph Daby (storytelling).

Willmar won the large-team competition with Sauk Centre second. (In speech, teams are judged by their total size, not school size.) Minnewaska was first among medium-sized teams, with Paynesville second. And Melrose won the small-team competition with Benson second.

This was the third competition for the PAHS speech team this winter. On Saturday, Feb. 12, they competed at Swanville-Upsala. Colbert (poetry), Lien (informative), and Mehr (humorous) took first place at this meet. Lenzmeier earned honorable mention in original oratory, and PAHS placed third in the small-team competition.

On Saturday, Feb. 5, the speech team competed at Sauk Rapids-Rice. Colbert was third in poetry, and Lien and Mehr earned honorable mention honors at this meet.
