Paynesville Press - February 23, 2005

Press wins award from MNA

The Paynesville Press earned a second place award in the 2003-04 Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Minnesota Newspaper Association.

The Press took second place among all newspaper in Best Explanation of Newspaper Operations or Newspaper Ethics for a column written by editor Michael Jacobson.

The Minute with Mike appeared in November 2002 and described the story creation process, including using the Press's digital archives, for a story about Gerry Schwartz, a U.S. Marine from Paynesville who died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II.

Judge's comments about the column were: "Enjoyed this column on how the new web/archive search tool helped a reporter tell his story. It not only explained how the new technology worked, it also walked the reader through the news-gathering process."

The Daily Journal from Fergus Falls took first place among the 23 entries in the category for a column about the new HIPPA laws.
