New city ordinance takes effect

No crossing yellow line to park

The new city ordinance prohibiting motorists from crossing double yellows to park has taken effect and the Paynesville Police Department will enforce it.

Parking sign Prohibiting the maneuver was needed for safety concerns, particularly in downtown Paynesville on Augusta Avenue, James Street, and Washburne Avenue, said Paynesville Police Chief Tony Schmitt. Twelve signs (right) were erected in the downtown area in January to warn motorists of the new ordinance.

Violations of the ordinance will be petty misdemeanors similar to other traffic tickets, said Schmitt. The fine will be $68, of which $30 is the fee to the city of Paynesville and the rest is county fees and court costs.
