Police warn residents to lock vehicles

By Michael Jacobson

A string of thefts from vehicles has caused Paynesville Police Chief Tony Schmitt to warn residents not to keep valuables in their vehicles and to make sure their vehicles are locked at all times.

Last week, the Paynesville Police received five reports of thefts from vehicles (mostly CD players, CDs, and cash) and two reports of burglaries (one at a business and another at a residence) on Tuesday, Feb. 4, and Wednesday, Feb. 5. (See the Blotter on page 2 of the print edition for details.)

Police believe that the thieves may have traveled by snowmobile, and police followed the tracks to several parking lots within the city: at the hospital, in the downtown area, and at apartment buildings.

The culprits appear to have searched or tried to enter dozens of vehicles looking for valuables, according to Schmitt.

Anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious on the evenings of Tuesday, Feb. 4, or Wednesday, Feb. 5, should contact the Paynesville Police Department at 320-243-7346.
