The Paynesville Press wins awards at newspaper convention

The Paynesville Press took home two second-place awards and two honorable mentions in the 1997-98 Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Minnesota Newspaper Association. The awards were announced at the Minnesota Newspaper Convention held Jan. 28-31 in Bloomington.

The Press took second place in advertising excellence for weekly newspapers with circulation between 2,501 and 5,000. “Ads flow nicely with news content,” commented the judges. “The best entertainment section of the bunch. Nice use of color. Well done football contest and business directory was simple and easy to read.”

Linda Stelling, editor, took second place for a photo story about old-time threshing. She also was given honorable mention recognition for another photo story about the new water tower in St. Martin.

Ann Winge Johnson also earned honorable mention recognition in the Best Institutional Advertisement category with the Paynesville Area Health Care System’s ad for the first baby of the new year in 1998.
