Mueller, Hess earn Youth Service Awards

By Michael Jacobson

Lions winners Paynesville Area High School seniors Amy Mueller (left) and Jen Hess (right) were honored recently for their community service and leadership.

The Paynesville Lions Club recognizes seniors throughout the year with its Youth Service Award.

Mueller and Hess were selected for January. The recognition pleased them both. "I was surprised, but honored," said Mueller.

"I was honored to have been considered," added Hess.

Both are active at school, in sports, and at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Lake Henry. "I think it is important to be active in your community and volunteering is a good way to do so," said Hess.

"It keeps me busy," added Mueller. "I enjoy most of the volunteer work I do. It reflects my interests."

Amy, the daughter of Kelly and Andy Mueller, is a peer helper, peer tutor in math, a PALs volunteer, a D.A.R.E. role model, and chaperone for middle school dances. She is a member of the student council and of the National Honor Society.

She competes in track and gymnastics, where she serves as a team captain, and is a member of the Letterwinners' Club.

At church, she is a mass server, teaches religious education classes, participates in the youth group, and helps with other church projects.

She also works at the Pilgrim Inn in Regal.

Jen, the daughter of Barb and Dave Hess, is also a peer helper, a peer tutor, a PALs volunteer, a D.A.R.E. role model, a chaperone for middle school dances, and a student aide who helps with Spanish-speaking students. She is the student council president and a member of the National Honor Society.

She is a member of the concert choir, the pops choir, and the marching band.

She is a captain in both track and cross country, and has earned all-state honors in seven seasons for her long-distance running. She is also a member of the Letterwinners' Club.

At church, she teaches religion classes, participates in youth group, and helps with church projects.

She also works at the Sportsman's Den in Lake Henry.

The Paynesville Lions Club will honor eight PAHS seniors throughout the school year for their community service and leadership. Jen Bruntlett, Amy Buermann, Rachel Koehn, and Ryan Whitcomb were recognized last fall.
