Carol Smith, 63, Eden Valley
Carol J. Smith, 63, of Eden Valley died on Monday, Jan. 17, at her home in Eden Valley after a five-year battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 21, at the Church of Our Lady in Manannah. Burial will be in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Darwin this spring.

Carol Joan Smith was born on April 6, 1947, to Orpha (Michelson) and Robert W. Smith in Litchfield. She grew up on the family farm between Litchfield and Darwin.

She attended District 15, a one-room rural school through sixth grade. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1965 and went to St. Cloud State University, where she majored in physical education and health.

After graduating from SCSU in 1969, she taught for two years at Mora High School.

In 1971, she began teaching at Paynesville High School, where she taught for 32 years until her retirement in 2003.

When Carol arrived at Paynesville, there were no girls' sports. Here, she established the girls' sports program by coaching basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, track and field, and softball.

In 2005, Paynesville High School established the Paynesville Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame, and Carol, along with seven others, were the first Paynesville alumni inducted.

Carol is survived by her nephew, Bill (Dee) Smith; niece, Stacie (Mel) Gambert; two great-nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and brother, Richard.


Ruth Johnson, 85, Paynesville
Ruth M. Johnson, 85, of Paynesville died on Friday, Jan. 14, at her home.

A private family funeral service will be held. Burial will be in the Atwater United Cemetery.

Ruth Johnson was born on Feb. 27, 1925, to Benjamin and Anna (Bushman) Knudson in Westbrook, Minn.

She married Glenn K. Johnson on May 13, 1944, in Litchfield. Their union lasted until Glenn's death on Sept. 10, 2006.

Ruth is survived by her children, Michael Johnson of Willmar, Ron Johnson of St. Regis, Mont., Roy (Ruth) Johnson of Heron, Mont., and Karlene (Wilbert) Reif, Jr. of Frankenmuth, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; and ten brothers and sisters.


Merlin Finger, 89, St. Paul
Merlin Finger, 89, of St. Paul and formerly of Paynesville, died on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Fairmount Ave. United Methodist Church in St. Paul. A private burial was held in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Merlin was a graduate of the University of Minnesota. He was a longtime employee of Sunbeam and US Bank and cherished his time at "The Lake."

He and his wife, Gloria, were able to share 64 years of marriage before his death.

Merlin is survived by his wife, Gloria; children, Lois (Lynn) Wogen and Bruce Finger; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl and Darwin.

Memorials are preferred to University of Minnesota Foundation: Merlin and Gloria Finger Student Recognition Fund.


Peggy Minette, 83, Paynesville
Emily Ann "Peggy" Minette, 83, of Paynesville died on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 17, at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.

Emily Ann Minette was born on March 30, 1927, to Claude and Hazel (Somerholm) Olson in Long Prairie. She grew up with her grandparents, Lars and Anna Somerholm, on a farm near Long Prairie.

She attended country grade school and graduated from Long Prairie High School.

On Nov. 15, 1946, Peggy married Arnold Edward Minette at her grandparent's home in Long Prairie. To this union, five children were born.

They made their home in St. Cloud while Arnold attended St. Cloud State University.

In 1949, they moved to Paynesville, where she worked as an operator for the phone company. They built their current home on Lake Koronis in 1972.

Peggy and Arnold were able to share in 64 years of marriage.

Peggy had been a resident of the Koronis Manor since 2008.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Arnold; children, Linda (Pete) Fisk of Paynesville, Pam (John) Latson of Moose Lake, and Scott (Laura) Minette of Oakdale; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; step-mother, Irene Olson; and siblings, Diane Olson, Ronald Olson, and Bruce Olson.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Mary Lynn; son, James; parents; grandparents; and siblings, Keith Olson and Karen Olson Smith.


Elsie Sonstegard, 91, Green Lake
Elsie Sonstegard, 91, of Green Lake and formerly of Paynesville, died on Thursday, Jan. 13, at Valin Senior Care in Montevideo.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m., at Nordland Lutheran Church in rural Paynesville. Burial will be in the Crow River Cemetery in rural Belgrade.

A visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Johnson Funeral Home in Paynesville and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Elsie Claire (Larson) Sonstegard was born on April 4, 1919, to Carl Linus and Clara (Holmberg) Larson at her home in Avoca, Minn. Elsie grew up on the family farm and attended rural grade school. She went on to graduate from Slayton, Minn., high school.

Elsie attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, S.D., and worked as a receptionist in Sioux Falls before moving to Los Angeles, Calif.

On Oct. 4, 1941, she married Donald Sonstegard. Following their marriage, they moved to Paynesville, where they raised their family.

Elsie is survived by her children, Gary (Elaine) Sonstegard of Montevideo, Virginia (Tim) Schmitt of Wadena, Deborah (Gary) Ellefson of Ashland, Wis., and Janel (Paul) Gamm of Fairfax, Vt.; 21 grandchildren; 23 greatgrandchildren; and brother, Maynard Larson, of Avoca, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Sonstegard; daughter, Julie; a daughter-in-law; a granddaughter; parents, Carl and Clara Larson; sister, Irene Miller; and brothers, Kenneth, Walter, Alvin, Paul, and Jack Larson.

Memorials may be made to Camp Courage, People Helping People Global, or Rice Hospice.


Evelyn Baker, 93, Paynesville
Evelyn V. Baker, 93, of Paynesville and formerly of Buffalo, died on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Assembly of God Church in Willmar. Burial was in the Spicer City Cemetery.

Evelyn Baker was born on March 23, 1917, to Victor and Mabel (Harlander) Norsten in Colfax Township in Kandiyohi County.

She grew up in the Spicer area, attending Spicer Elementary School and Willmar Senior High School. Her interest in art in school and in extra evening classes resulted in first place awards at the Kandiyohi County Fair. She later attended North Central Bible Institute in Minneapolis.

On Aug. 31, 1940, she married Willard Baker.

She worked for nearly 28 years at the Willmar Regional Treatment Center.

Following their retirement, Willard and Evelyn were able to spend nine years in Arizona before moving back to Minnesota.

In recent years, they lived at Park View Care Center in Buffalo. Their union lasted until Willard's death in 2002.

Since November 2006, Evelyn had been a resident of the Koronis Manor in Paynesville.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters, LaDon (Dave) Garner of Atwater and Michele (Larry) Thompson of Belgrade; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dennis Norsten of Coon Rapids, Lyndon Norsten of Willmar, and Wayne Norsten of Minneapolis; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willard; son, Daryl; a daughter-in-law; four brothers, Wendell, Donald, Harvey, and Wilton Norsten; and an infant sister and brother.


Gloria Gimse, 87, Paynesville
Gloria C. Gimse, 87, of Paynesville died on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at her home after an extended illness.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m., at the Stanchfield Baptist Church in Stanchfield, Minn. Burial will be in the spring in the Rice Lake Cemetery, Braham, Minn.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Gloria Christine Troolin was born on March 10, 1923, to Andrew and Annie (Larson) Troolin in Stanchfield, Minn.

Gloria graduated from Braham High School in 1942. Following graduation, she worked at East Central Electric Company in Braham and as a nurses' aid at the Midway Hospital in St. Paul before attending Lee's Beauty School in St. Paul.

After graduation from Lee's Beauty School in 1944, she worked at Dumont's House of Beauty and for many years, managing the shop.

On May 11, 1946, she married Donald "Peter" Mattson. Donald died on March 11, 1984.

Gloria married Kermit Gimse on May 26, 1990, in Spicer.

Gloria is survived by her husband, Kermit; step-daughters, Kryss Gimse (fiance Bill Grant) of Willmar, Jeanne Jennum (Richard) of Anoka, Ann Furr (Jeremy) of Jeffersonton, Va., and Deb Hoyt (Jeff) of Otsego; nine step- grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Peterson, Marilyn Johnson, Rose Ann Nickel, and Ruth Carlson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Gladys Pearson; and brother, Donald Troolin.


Marie Spaulding, 96, Rochester
Marie Spaulding, 96, of Rochester died on Monday, Dec. 27, at St. Mary's Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Waite Park.

A visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Marie Elizabeth Spaulding was born on March 11, 1914, to Joseph and Olga (Hinrichs)Speier at Osakis, Minn.

She married Milton C. Spaulding Dec. 26, 1933, at Holy Angels Cathedral in St. Cloud.

The couple owned and operated businesses in Clinton, Minn., and later in Paynesville, before moving to Rochester in 1959, when they purchased Culligan Water Conditioning. Marie was both co-owner and office manager of the business until the couple retired in 1976.

Their union lasted until Milton's death on Sept. 29, 2002.

Marie is survived by her children, Robert (Yvonne) Spaulding of Detroit Lakes/Sun City, Ariz., Sandra (Ken) Randall of Walker, and Victoria (Gabriel) Laibinis of Dacula, Ga.; nine granddaughters; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Vange Carlson of Graceville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother, and one sister.


Kermit Peterson, 82, Manhattan, Kan.
Kermit O. Peterson, 82, of Manhattan, Kan., died on Saturday, Jan. 1, at the Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 10:30 a.m., at First Lutheran Church in Manhattan. Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Riley.

Kermit Peterson was born on March 8, 1928, to George and Myrtle (Lalim) Peterson in Renville, Minn.

Kermit attended schools in Lake Lillian and in New London. He married Edna Wurzburger on Sept. 18, 1949.

Kermit worked in construction until he entered the U.S. Army in 1952. He was a veteran of the Korean War. After returning from the service, he resided in Manhattan, Kan.

He was employed as a heavy equipment operator by the Riley County Public Works Dept. for 35 years, retiring in 1988.

After retirement, he maintained the roads of Wildcat and Sherman townships.

He is survived by his wife, Edna of Manhattan; two daughters, Kim (Vern) Bulk of Riley, Kan., and Rhonda (Greg) Lund of Manhattan; three grandchildren; three brothers, Orlyn Peterson of Topeka, Earl Peterson of Manhattan, and Leon Peterson of Paynesville.

Ted Hoekstra, 76, Paynesville
Theodore "Ted" Hoekstra, 76, of Paynesville died on Monday, Jan. 3, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 6, at Crystal Hills Assembly of God in Paynesville. Burial was in the Paynesville Cemetery.

Theodore "Ted" John Hoekstra was born on Nov. 5, 1934, to Martin and Clara Hoekstra in Bell, Calif. He grew up in the Pennock and Roseland area.

On April 22, 1955, Ted married Deloris Krupke. They made their home north of Paynesville, where they farmed for 35 years and ran Hoekstra Trucking for a few years. Shortly after his retirement in 1992, Ted opened TedŐs RV Land in Paynesville.

In 1995, Ted suffered his first heart attack. For the last 11 months, he had numerous complications but fought the good fight.

Tedd is survived by his wife, Deloris; children, Jerry (Rita) Hoekstra of Paynesville, Jodi (Doug) Molone of Indianola, Iowa, and Joan (Adam) Lindquist of Becker; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Anne Lezer, Martha Peterson, and Connie Johnson; and a daughter-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jim Hoekstra; brother, Clarence Hoekstra; and his parents.


Marie Hart, 89, Paynesville
Marie Hart, 89, of Paynesville died on Friday, Jan. 7.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Marie Hart was born on Dec. 8, 1921, to Michael and Grace (Bruggeman) Roeser in Cologne, Minn.

She worked as a laundress for many years in St. Cloud.

She lived the majority of her life in Central Minnesota.

Marie belonged to St. Louis Catholic Church and Christian Women.

Marie is survived by her children, Allen Hart of Moose Lake and Marie (Jim) Schwarz of New London; three grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one infant son, Jimmy; and brothers and sisters, Francis, Bernard, Louis, Raymond, James, Gerald, Rosella Knutson, and Marcella Bailey.
